Album 88 proudly received a Proclamation on behalf of Congresswoman Nikema Williams recognizing the 50th anniversary and history of excellence on WRAS-Atlanta. On December 17, 2021, Press Secretary Ed Hula, District Director Aaron Johnson and Chief of Staff Melanee Farrah delivered the Proclamation to Album 88 staff and longtime adviser Jeff Walker.
The Proclamation reads as follows:
IN HONOR OF 50 YEARS OF BROADCASTING EXCELLENCE FROM WRAS-ATLANTA
Whereas, Today, Friday, December 17, 2021, I congratulate WRAS-Atlanta for 50 years of broadcasting excellence; and
Whereas, WRAS-Atlanta is the second radio station to broadcast from the campus of Georgia State University, and reflects the school’s radio heritage with the call sign “Radio At State”; and
Whereas, WRAS-Atlanta first came onto to the airwaves on January 18, 1971 broadcasting an excerpt of “Also Spoke Zarathustra” before playing “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison; and
Whereas, On March 26, 1987, WRAS-Atlanta began broadcasting from a 100,000-watt transmitter, the strongest signal available, in turn becoming the first entirely student-run 100,000-watt radio station in the country, and
Whereas, Throughout WRAS-Atlanta’s history, the station has become nationally known for its eclectic, and cutting-edge music programming being the station to debut new music from artists like The Who, OutKast, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Replacements to name a few; and
Whereas, Numerous outlets have recognized the excellence of WRAS-Atlanta’s programming including “Best Radio Station” by Creative Loafing, “Best Music Director” by College Music Journal; and
Whereas, Popular quiz show Jeopardy included WRAS-Atlanta as an answer; and
Whereas, Alumni of WRAS-Atlanta have gone on to have successful broadcasting careers being heard and seen on networks throughout the United States and beyond; and
Whereas, Now broadcasting on three HD signals and online, the radio station continues to provide broadcast opportunities to Georgia State students and lead the way in local and eclectic programming.
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that I, Nikema Williams, Member of the U.S. House of Representatives hereby issue this Congressional Proclamation in recognition of 50 years of broadcasting excellence from
